Shape and Placement

  • At minimum, at least a few patches must be visible.
-- At maximum, it can cover the whole body, as long as the base coat is still recognizable and visible against Merle.
  • Avoid round, or non-textured edges. Merle will always be patchy with a 'fuzzy', tear-like shape.
  • The edges and patches must follow the body flow.
  • This marking can have a few holes but not too many.
  • This marking cannot mimic other markings, especially Patches and Painted.

Color

  • This marking is always bi-colored, with the upper layer being darker than the lower layer.
  • When Het, each part can be one solid color.
-- Both parts should be different colors, so that each part is visible.
  • When Hom, each part can have a two-toned gradient.
-- The additional color and direction of the gradient can differ between parts.
-- Both colors of the upper layer need to be darker than the colors of the lower layer.
  • Can be any natural color.
  • Can be affected by color modifiers.

Allowed Edge Types

Examples

This is an example of the minimum coverage of Merle.

This is an example of the maximum coverage Merle could have as you can still see the base coat underneath, anything more would be too much!

No examples yet!

This Merle is illegal because its forming too much of a solid patch, and the upper layer is lighter than the lower layer!
