Shale's personality is best described as an acquired taste. She is bold, headstrong, and gruff, not often the type to have many friends or get along well with others. Her closest companions are her siblings, Soot and Snow, and despite acting aloof and distant, she is fiercely protective of them. When it comes to their safety, no threat is too great for her to take on.

A loner type, Shale often prefers time to herself. She'll usually hunt by herself, though she'll share anything she catches with her family without hesitation. She is also very particular about her personal space, a trait she and her eldest sister share in common -- she doesn't like to be touched, be it friendly or violent, and will retaliate with aggression if her personal space is invaded.

With a personality like hers, Shale does best with the freedom to make her own choices. She doesn't take well to being bossed around -- and she and Snow tend to clash in that regard -- and will often do just the opposite as she's told just to be spiteful. As a result of disliking any form of chain of command, Shale doesn't believe in rigid pack structure -- who needs a leader anyway?
