The sound of rustling in the bushes scared out the small birds that used them as shelter now disturbed as a round head popped out with flowers in his beak before he dove back in with his face to pluck more, it was courting season again and it rolled around fast with Grenadier getting a head start on impressing Twinspot again this year as last year they had a successful clutch and this year he wanted to court again. He had spent all morning looking for flowers to bring to her for a gift in hopes she was ready to court but she seemed to be off doing her own prep work to court Grenadier and the two were bound to bump into each other shortly.

Not far from where Grenadier was , Twinspot was looking for various pebbles to bring to their nesting spot when they picked it this year as she hadn’t gotten to build one like last time so the two would have to prepare a lot better this year and build one together. She was having a hard time picking the perfect ones to use and it seemed to be a harder task than she had thought. “Ah there are so many choices to pick from they have to be perfect, it holds the nest together”  she said snorting angrily when she had to drop one and hold the other. 

Back to Grenadier he had finally picked a bunch of flowers that he thought Twinspot would love with various colors that were vibrant and with that he was off to find Twinspot which didn’t take the male long as he spotted her up the hill from the thicket he was in looking for stuff. Soon he called out to her “Twinspot I’m coming, I got a gift for you, wait for me” he said making his way up the hill with his beak full of flowers which had caught Twinspot off guard when she looked up to hear him calling her.

“Oh Grenadier there you are, and what’s with all the flowers you didn’t have to do that!” She said, calling back with a across her beak, the two coming head to head as he put the flowers down in front of her and they nudged heads together lovingly. 

“Of course I did you needed a gift and I wanted to do way better than last year” he said before looking at the various stones that Twinspot had been gathering for their nest they had to build.

“What are all these for Twinspot?” he asked, looking at them curiously and waiting for an answer from her after she inspected the flowers before she turned, swinging her tail. “Well we have to build a nest this year since I didn’t make one yet like last time” she said “and these are what I collected so far and what we can use” she added.

The two stood looking at them trying to figure out which ones would be the best to use now that Grenadier knew what they were for, “ I think we just pick a few and start and then decide if we want more” he said grabbing a few in his beak before waddling back towards the thicket with Twinspot following as she carried the flowers in agreement with his idea about the pebbles this time. They found a spot in the thicket that was deep as Grenaider took the stones and made a circle moving out of the way so Twinspot could place the flowers as soft bedding for the nest in which she stood back and looked over the nest and snorted in excitement “this is the first time we get to build a nest together and it looks great Grenaider keep up the good work” she said before taking a seat.

“What else do we need Twinspot?” He said looking around for other materials that he could add but it looked like that Twinspot was content with what they had due to the thicket providing most of the nesting area this time. “ I think this is good enough, the flowers are nice and the stones will work. Besides, we should spend some time together “ she said, laying down in the nest area. “ the hatchlings came so fast and we didn’t get enough time for ourselves” in which Grenaider nodded and smiled before joining her on the nest area, and cuddled together with one another.

“Your right those little pebbles were quick to arrive last season” besides the two had did so much in the past few hours they earned themselves some time alone with another which was well needed for the pair even though it was their second time courting one another which it was always easy for the two and never difficult.

“I wonder what they will look like this year” Twinspot said to him out loud as she always loved seeing the new babies when they arrived especially if they looked like Grenadier which most did last time, and a mix of the two at that. After a bit of hatchling talk the two decided it was time to get some rest and test out their new nesting spot to make sure it was perfect for the arrival of the hatchlings.

“Let’s get some rest Twinspot now” Grenaider said as he closed his eyes and dozed off in which Twinspot laid her head down next to his and sighed contently, she was just over excited for their second clutch to come, but her mate was right and that was they needed all the rest they could get for the next upcoming days. Twinspot closed her eyes as she dozed off with the two snuggled up against one another.

Their nest would be full in the next few days and they would welcome their hatchlings into the harsh world, but having experienced this once already they were always prepared and so rest was the first step and they would need every ounce of it they could get.
