An Assembled Assortment of Aquatic Animals
Clockwise, starting from farthest right:
Ammonite fossilized in pyrite
It's very shiny! The photo really doesn't do it justice, you'll just have to take my word for it.
Trilobite fossil
One of the most iconic prehistoric sea critters, so of course I needed to have one.
Sea urchin fossil
It's so smooth and polished, it doesn't even look like a rock! When I found this one, someone else commented that "isn't that just a sand dollar?" To which I pointed out that sand dollars are a type of sea urchin. The more you know!
Ammonite with snake head
Hailing from Yorkshire, England, legend holds that a saint once turned all the snakes in the land into stone. So it's become a local tradition to add a carved snake's head to the front end of ammonite fossils.
Fish fossil
An extremely well-preserved small fish. Look closely and you can make out all kinds of fine details. Not a terribly rare fossil, but still fun just to look at.
Keichousaurus fossil and matching impression
A small, aquatic reptile. This one is presumably a juvenile given that it's extremely small even for the species. Still, the detail of both the fossil and its paired impression is incredible!
