Accidental Confession
Today was a very unusual day, because for once Agatha was nowhere to be seen around her friends Drift and Abaddon. Her and Drift had been more or less inseparable since they first met, so it felt rather empty for the black and white carno as her feathered friend was absent.
Abaddon, the almost pure black male, of course noticed that Drift was feeling rather saddened by Agatha being gone, so he did as best as he could to support and comfort her while providing as much of a distraction as he could without making her feel like he did not want to listen.
“I never realised how dull everything is without her!” Drift whined as she dramatically flopped down in the lush, spring grass, causing some grasshoppers to jump away in panic to avoid getting smushed.
“Not that I dislike your company or anything, but I am sure you understand.” she quickly clarified, as to not hurt Abaddon’s feelings.
“I am well aware we fill very different roles in your life, I take no offence. You are more than welcome to miss your friend.” Abaddon said to her with a gentle smile. “Would you perhaps like to go for a walk, to distract yourself a little and let your mind wander?”
Drift looked at him while thinking about his proposal, making a rather focused face while doing so. Did she want to go somewhere, or did she just want to lay here and be dramatic all day? Tough decision, she thought, letting out a bothered sigh.
“I do just want to self-loathe all day, not going to lie.. But I know neither you or Agatha would want that for me because 'you want what is best for me' and silly stuff like that.” Drift said after some more thinking, doing her very best air quote impression with her short fingers.
Abaddon could not help but snort at how silly she looked while doing so, she still had her humour intact despite being sad, which was a very good sign. Drift just stuck her glowy tongue out at him for snorting, but she was not even remotely offended, rather the opposite. She appreciated how he did not push her to do anything she did not want, but still suggested what he knew she needed. She was lucky to have such a thoughtful and caring guy, she just had to figure out when it was a good time to thank him for being so supportive. It had to make sense, be said at a meaningful moment. She nodded to herself as she thought about it, leaving Abaddon completely clueless as to what was going on inside her head.
“Alright, take me wherever you had in mind.” Drift abruptly blurted out as she had finished her train of thought and realised she had let Abaddon wait for her long enough.
“Sure thing princess.” he replied with a gentle smile as he got up, and he chuckled as he looked at Drift’s shocked face. He had never really used any pet names before, and he was not entirely sure himself why he did so now, but he could not exactly take it back. There is no way to rewind time, after all.
Stunned speechless, Drift also got up and followed Abaddon. Her heart was beating just a little faster than normal, which caused her bioluminescent features to pulsate slightly more rapidly than normal. Abaddon took notice, but decided not to point it out, so as to not make her feel awkward. Had he accidentally flirted with her? Would she even want him if he did? Was he himself even interested in something more than their current platonic relationship? He had never been so unsure before. Maybe there had always been a small spark, but they had not noticed it, or he was just being silly and delusional. He had to make up his mind, to know if he should make a move or not. Objectively, the place of distraction that he had in mind would be considered romantic, he had just not thought about it until now. What if she did not like him like that and got the wrong impression and would not like him even as a friend after this? That would be such a disaster.
Abaddon stopped in his tracks for a moment as he finally did realise that he had feelings for Drift. Being this worried about someone hating you for a misunderstanding had to be more deeply emotionally rooted than something platonic, he figured. Though he of course was not fully certain, perhaps it was worth a try.
Drift looked at him, her head slightly tilted as she was curious about what he was thinking of.
“You almost seem more out of it than me right now, are you okay?” she asked as she walked up beside Abaddon.
“Sorry, yeah. I just got lost in thought.” he nervously chuckled, not wanting to just blurt out his feelings out of nowhere. “Shall we keep going? It is not much further.”
Drift smiled and nodded. She was really looking forward to what he had planned. She was in good spirits as well, and was distracted enough to not think about how much she missed her friend. Just living in the moment, one step at a time. She also could not stop thinking about Abaddon calling her princess, and she was trying very hard to figure out what she was actually feeling about it. It made her chest all fluttery and warm, which surely had to mean.. Something? She knew for sure that she did not hate it, and that he meant nothing malicious with it either. If he did he would not have looked so surprised that it slipped out either. Maybe.. Just maybe.. She could be his princess, she thought for a second and her heart started racing. She was certain now that she indeed had romantic feelings for Abaddon, but what if he did not have feelings for her? She did not want to be rejected, not now, not without Agatha. Oh how she missed her, she would know exactly what to do!
As Drift’s thoughts were running more and more rampant, she was pulled back to reality when Abaddon cleared his throat to get her attention.
“Welcome back to the present.” he joked with yet another smile.
Drift just scoffed at his comment, smiling back gently.
“Thanks, it got a little wild in there.” she replied and pointed to her armoured head with the tip of her tail.
“I noticed, we finally arrived, though.” he said as he looked away from her.
Drift looked up in the same direction and Abaddon and audibly gasped at the gorgeous view. The sun was starting to set and the water almost looked like fire from up where they were.
“Do you like it?” Abaddon nervously asked, as he felt his heart beating faster. This was it, this was his time to shine, unless she hated it, of course..
“It is absolutely beautiful..” Drift replied, still looking out towards the ocean.
“Just like you, then.”
Drift quickly looked over at Abaddon, questioning herself if she heard him correctly. He could tell she was unsure what he said, so he chuckled nervously.
“I said you are beautiful, in case you think you misheard me.” he clarified, mortified that he had ruined this moment.
“You are way too good at making me question myself.” Drift sighed as she stepped closer and leaned on Abaddon, who almost lost his balance as he was not prepared.
“Is this a date, then?” she asked, looking at him with her glowing gaze.
“I suppose it is..” Abaddon nervously replied.
“I was hoping you would say that.” Drift said, very happy they were alone for once. This could have been awkward with someone else present.
