The smell of the flowers that bloomed during the spring time and the warm sun beat down as pale white scales peaked through thick brush along with a large tail that swung back and forth. It was Gorko and he was picking flowers with his beak as he had wanted to gather a bunch to present to Iroka who he had been planning to win over for the season and by picking flowers he thought it might score him brownie points with Iroka but finding them seemed to be a lot harder than he thought.

“These stupid spines, making it hard to pick these flowers” He said, annoyed shaking the various leaves from his back that got stuck to him, Gorko wanted the flowers to be perfect for Iroka and she wasn’t too far from him. Iroka was avoiding most of the other dace of her species due to the courtship season being in full swing and she only had eyes for Gorko but she hadn’t seen him in a bit and he usually wasn’t to far from her most of the time, she sat down with a sigh and swung her tail as she enjoyed the heat from the spring warmth that took ahold of the island.

“I wonder where Gorko is off to today?” She hummed to herself looking around hoping to spot him but nothing came of it, little did she know he was on his way to her but he was bringing this with him to impress her and ask to court for the season. 

“This should be enough for her I think” Gorko said to himself with a smile as he emerged from the nearby flower bushes he had found himself in while looking for the flowers, and he had found a bunch and a lot of them matched her pink scales which was the aim he was going for, now it was just time to work up the courage to approach her which was a challenge within itself for Gorko. He had always been shy around her and typically was quiet and not upfront about his feelings but he had been preparing for this so he was going in with some confidence this time around.

“Here goes nothing” he gulped and held the flower assortment in his beak as he approached Iroka who perked up when she spotted him giving him a great smile but also shocked at the flowers he was carrying which made her red, deeper than her pale pink scales. She didn’t move and waited for him to approach her but she did stand but in excitement.

“Gorko there you are! And what’s with the pretty flowers” she called out, waiting for him to get closer, in which he smiled back at her reaction before speaking out to her.

“They are for you Iroka” he said softly before getting to her and placing them on the ground in front of her as he shyly looked away moving his tail nervously awaiting for her to speak. 

“For me? They are beautiful, you were out finding these” she said looking at them and then looking up at Gorko who was too shy but looked towards her, “I’m so lucky” she added before walking towards him and rubbing his head with hers before licking his beak. She knew what he was asking already and she was accepting “ you don’t even have to ask me, it’s a yes” she said softly and picked up the flowers before placing them in between her tail spikes happily.

“I’m glad you love them and really?” Gorko said as he rubbed his head back before watching her place the flowers he had gotten for her in her tail spikes which made her look pretty which had him red, he didn’t think it would be that easy and he was so happy that it was smooth and simple as it was his first time courting and it seemed like he did it correctly. Iroka nodded and moved down into the forest brush from the hill they were on as they would need to figure out how to build a nest since that was the next step for the two and it being their first time.

“Are we going to build a nest?” Gorko called out nervously in which Iroka nodded before letting out a laugh “yes we are and I’m sure it will be an experience” she said looking for various sticks and material they could use, besides it didn’t have to be perfect. The two moved slowly showing each other many of the materials they had found and in which they were going to use to build their nest. Gorko stopping every so often to make sure Iroka was okay and enjoying herself with her checking in with him as well before they had picked a spot that was out in the nice warm sunny area that was surrounded by warm dirt and sandy like terrain, this is exactly what they were looking for and the newly courted pair got to work quickly as Iroka placed ferns and plant life as the base in the sandy area after she had dug a low hole.

Gorko would join in and bring her other things he collected, making sure it was what she wanted, before joining her in the building. It was a lot of work but eventually the two stood back and adored and admired their work. The nest was large and filled with soft ferns followed by a few soft sticks to keep the shape and protect the eggs when they came.

“All done, would you look at that not bad for our first time Gorko” she said with a happy smile before Moving her tail down and dropping the flowers he had gotten her into the nest for a last minute touch. Gorko smiled and watched Iroka add the flowers which made him happy and he nodded in agreement they did great for their first nest building and they did it together which is what mattered most to him, the two would now await the arrival of eggs and the little hatchlings that would emerge in the next coming days, they would have their work cut out for them surely.
