The spring air was warm and gentle, a soft breeze waving over the wide open field two neuqenraptors stood within — Malinois and Corvette. The two youngsters took it upon themselves to venture further than the boring safety of their nests, bored out of their minds when their caregivers insisted upon ‘nap time’. The sun was out and the weather wasn’t terrible, why sleep when they could play around and cause trouble? So that’s what they decided on, ditching their fellow nestmates and caregivers to frolic in the open field — not supervised and far from being aware of their surroundings further than their long snouts.

Malinois at least slightly blended into the open field’s environment, but Corvette stood out like a sore thumb — looking more like a smoldering log than grass and dirty. But the two didn’t quite care for it at the moment, too busy chasing each other in some odd game of tag, taking turns stealing a small twig they found to see who would be chased. Happily chirping and squawking as they ran in twirling patterns, kicking up dirt and the fluff of dandelions that littered the ground beneath their clawed feet. Soft barely there imprints within the just drying dirt they ran over, flattening smaller flowers and weeds hidden within the taller glass.

As the two hatchlings swirled around within the warm sun of the spring day, they heard odd honking and far louder footsteps than those they were familiar with. The two raptors were being shaken alongside the ground beneath them with whatever was wandering around further in the field — the two turning to each other, the twig falling out of Malinois maw out of quiet shock. Corvette looked between the path forward and where the two had come from, quietly deciding on whether the two should continue forward or run back to safety. But they don’t have the choice, as a source of the weird honking comes galloping out of the taller grass into the little clearing the two were stood within — a small parasaur was quick to slide to a stop and tumbled over their feet, Malinois and Corvette having to quickly dash out of the way of the bowling ball of a parasaur. The two hatchlings watching their fellow hatchling grumble and whine as they slowly rise from their jumble of limbs.

Malinois, the braver of the duo, was quick to skitter forward and sniff out the weird parasaur. Watching as they slowly came to their feet and shook out the dirt from their scruffy coat, letting out a snort as quite a few dandelions had been disturbed as they tumbled into the grass. Malinois inching forward as Corvette warily stood where she had skittered to in the rush that was avoiding being squashed. Head tilted as she looked over the odd new dinosaur before them, Malinois all but quick to yell out asking if the parasaur was alright, what they were, what was their name, and even if they wanted to play with them. That they’d even run slower to let their new friend be able to play more fairly with them! Which Corvette quickly yelled at Malinois for her rude words and bombarding the other hatchling. Quick to scamper over and nip at Malinois’ odd collar and pull her off the downed parasaur, grumbling between gritted teeth about the other embarrassing her.

The parasaur craned their neck to look at the two tiny raptors, tilting it as they gave out a quiet honk — the noise quieting the twos bickering, their heads whipping towards their fellow hatchling with wide eyes. Malinois quick to squawk back eagerly, even giving an experimental squeaky honk back — scampering back towards the parasaur as Corvette quietly went over how odd the noise was. Didn’t know others could make that noise, though she’s shaken out of her stupor as a chorus of other honks rose over the spring air, looking towards the broken down path of tall grass the parasaur had come from. There were more?! Corvette was amazed, giving a tentative version of a honk as Malinois and the small parasaur looked to her with big pleading eyes. Seemed they’d already decided they were best friends…typical of Malinois in Corvette’s eyes. Not that she minded, Malinois would scope out new playmates and she didn’t have to do that much more work — win win!

The parasaur and Malinois were quick to honk themselves, the two hatchlings eagerly stood and starting to form a line — the parasaur the leader, Malinois behind them, and Corvette made her way to join them as the caboose. Each hatchling took their own turns honking, sometimes even hooting — whatever their new parasaur friend would offer up as a sound for them to mimic back. The line of hatchlings making their way towards where the parasaur said was their herd, the loud group of hooting and honking becoming louder as they neared the other clearing within the large field. Seeing a large swarm of differently colored parasaurs, each singing their own songs within the group — an odd chorus of them, now joined by Malinois, Corvette, and their new friend. Their more unsure honks and hooting welcomed warmly into the group, a few other hatchlings joining their returning friend or sibling, and the two tiny raptors.

Malinois and Corvette were soon joined up within a bigger train of hatchlings, skipping and hopping around the inner circle of adult and elder parasaurs as they sang and danced. A few adults stomping their feet in rhythm, the two young raptors amazed at all the celebration happening around them — it had been so quiet back at their nests, who knew others were enjoying the spring season this much! Malinois looking back to Corvette with an eager look, Corvette smiling back — they made a great choice to sneak away from their nap today, they’ll deal with the repercussions of their mischief later, for now they had to celebrate the sounds of spring! Honking and hooting filling the air, stomping from the adult parasaurs shaking the ground and resounding loudly amongst the earth that was otherwise barren with just grass and smaller plants.
