It was a cool morning on the island and the world was quiet and still, until it wasn’t with the sound of the loud crash of horns and scales as they scraped across each other before the stillness returned again broken at the sound of heavy snorting and pawing at the ground as dirt flew causing dust clouds and for it to go everywhere. It was the rut season for the large styracosaurus herds that massed the island during this time with most males showing off their skills along with their large crests and horns that lined them, it was a dangerous time of year for the large herbivores. Courtship was dangerous and posed some challenges during duels that took place to show off sometimes causing life long injuries.

Many of the herds gathered in the grassland areas of the island and a large mass had grown over the few days with Eternus being apart of it as he was new to the courtship season and watching from the side lines had the young male nervous as the many other males engaged in harsh battles to show who was on top with many leaving battered and bruised, but any of the sty’s he had seen didn’t catch his eye and he was getting bored at the thought of fighting. Wandering off Eternus dug his horn in the ground to try and mock the other styracosaurus but he didn’t seem to have the hang of it as dirt stuck to his horn with it falling on his beak making him messy.

“This is harder than I thought, maybe I should try my efforts elsewhere” he said, stopping and looking back at the large herd who were busy watching others. Further off In the distance a large lumbering male who was littered with scars was approaching the herd with many styracosaurus going quiet and mumbling as he walked by… it was Descole the outcast and one who often didn’t waste his time around the large herds but it seemed like he was here to join in on the courting season which was odd for the large male and he stayed quiet not stopping.

Eternus took notice of the new male and watched intently as Descole made his way towards him and off to an open area where none of the herd was, it seemed like Eternus would have to get the attention of Descole and the battle scarred male caught his interest. Eternus made his way over slowly as he stopped not too far away and started pawing the dirt and using his horn to rip the grass up before stopping to see if Descole was watching but the old male seemed to be unbothered and hadn’t noticed Eternus as of yet.

“Surely this will caught his eye.. maybe pushing a tree” he said snorting and shaking his head , he was determined to impress Descole and he would make sure he could even if he failed but that was the chance he took for being new at the courting season, least he was giving effort.

“Nothing striking this time around” Descole grumbled before shaking his head and scanning the area in front of him before his eyes landed on Eternus’s black and white scale patterning, “Hmm, who is this” he added before shifting his weight watching intently. He had never seen Eternus around which caught his interest. It was now time to shine for Eternus as he noticed Descole’s daze on him as he snorted and dug his head into a stump that was rooted into the grassy ground, if he could show off his strength maybe it would help his chances of impressing him, with that thought in his mind he put all his might into the centre of his horn as he lifted with the stump slowly starting to lift.

Descole snorted and let out an Impressed grunt as he watched seeing the stump lift, as Eternus pushed and eventually tore it from the ground knocking it over and snorting before looking over at Descole who now had stood up and was making his way over to him. “I’m impressed” he said, letting out a call to Eternus who stopped and looked up before answering him back “ I’m glad you took notice” before giving off a friendly smile towards the much larger male.

“Haven’t seen you around much, are you new to the herd” Descole said before pawing at the ground and lowering his horn and showing off his crest to Eternus, it was covered in battle wounds and scars, it was Descole’s turn to impress as he rubbed against Eternus in a friendly way before snorting and nudging him away from the herd, the two would need to get to know each other but it seemed like they had both impressed one another, not the normal sty way but in their own way. Eternus was quick to follow Descole as he was happy that his hard work went noticed and it seemed like the pair would be good together In rearing the young that would be coming shortly in the nesting season.

“We will have to find a good spot , so keep your eye out” Descole said to Eternus who nodded in agreement , a good nesting spot was important especially for the two if they weren’t staying within the herd so it was a new experience for Eternus who was excited about the companionship the two had sprouted. The two would continue to stick together and court one another for the next few days to come with them showing off their strength and being able to provide for one another. 

The two eventually found a large spot that was hidden away that would work perfect to build a nest, Descole starting to grab sticks as Eternus joined in picking up brush and moving things away they wouldn’t use. Soon enough there would be wobbly hatchlings that the two males would have to watch over and they were preparing heavily for their arrival of them.
