Apple bobble team
Soaring through the chilly air one cloudy morning, the green tropeognathus named Wasabi had spotted something new among the city ruins. Flairs, signs and other colourful things had started to appear all around the city museum. How odd.. He wondered how long they had been there, since he had not been near the city for a while.
He had of course taken this opportunity to fly closer and investigate, to make sure it was nothing dubious, but everyone around seemed delighted and excited about whatever it was. He was sceptical, but had a bit sceptical, but had ultimately decided to fly back home and inform his beloved Crumb, a brown Tapejara, of his curious find.
“Hey! Good to see you back so soon, Wasabi. Did you find anything fun?” Crumb asked as she greeted her partner by the edge of their primitive roost.
“Some weird thing is going on at the museum, I made sure there was nothing dangerous around so that you could come with me.” Wasabi replied as he gently nudged Crumb with his much larger beak. “I was intending to be gone for a bit longer, but this place is surely best explored together, I think.”
“That does sound exciting.” Crumb said, with a curious look on her face. “Do you wanna go back there now?”
“Yeah we might as well.” Wasabi agreed, smiling softly with his eyes, as his beak could show no such expression.
The two fliers set out through the cloudy, cold air, with the northerly winds being in their favour on their journey towards the run down museum.
Just as Wasabi had informed Crumb, lights and colourful decor were surrounding the entrance, and she suspected a lot more was set up inside. The brown Tapejara was excited, she had never seen such a thing before, and neither had Wasabi.
The two of them landed by the large, closed double doors and looked around, and in the crowd Wasabi spotted a familiar face among a group of anteos.
“You!! It has been a while!” he honked as he skittered over to his partner in crime, a sandy brown anteo by the name of Järker.
“Oh great, with you around this surely could not be boring. You are like a pesky fly for stupid activities.” Järker snickered as he wagged his brown and orange tail slightly. “Good to see you.”
“You know I can't miss an opportunity to be an annoyance.” Wasabi cackled. “This is Crumb, by the way. She is my wife.”
Wasabi gestured towards the slightly shy Tapejara who was halfway hiding behind him, waving to Järker.
“Hello, nice to meet you.” she said quietly.
“Wife? You have been busy I see. Very nice to meet you Crumb, I hope he isn't too much of a headache to live with!” the anteo laughed, with Wasabi pretending to be offended at his comment.
Crumb giggled at Järker's words and her partner's face
“Only sometimes.” she smiled.
Through the door, a white, quilled oviraptor with brown spots walked out, wearing a colourful jester hat with jingles on in. He grabbed a stool that he promptly climbed up on and he stretched as tall as he could.
“Welcome, esteemed guests! Today is a very special day, our final day in town, in fact! So we welcome you all to attend all of our fun games while you still can, there are many prizes to win and fun memories to create with your family and friends so ENJOY!” he exclaimed in an attempt to hype up the crowd.
Järker looked back at his three friends. “Mind if I join these two for today?” he asked.
The darker on of the three, a bioluminescent female, shook her head. “Be my guest. Don’t forget about our plans for tonight though.”
“Of course not, hot springs are a must!” Järker assured his friend before turning back to Wasabi and Crumb. “Come on, let’s go!”
To protect their wings from all the traffic and to avoid flying into things, Wasabi and Crumb were sitting on top of Järker as he trudged forward through the crowd without a care in the world. His resting bitch face made sure the path was mostly clear, as no one wanted to piss him off. A good defence, in all honesty.
Amongst all the spacecrafts and some planet models, Järker came to a halt as he saw that very same oviraptor that had opened the doors earlier preparing some sort of game next to a large space shuttle of sorts, an escape pod to be exact. He marched off towards him to see if it was anything fun that the three of them could do.
“Hey, nice speech before. What game is this?” Järker asked as Wasabi and Crumb jumped off of his back, with Wasabi looking extra curious.
“Oh hello there, thank you very much! This game is called apple bobbing, I have just finished filling up the pool so now all that is left is for me to pour in these fresh, juicy apples and you are good to go! No prizes for this game, though you may of course eat any apples you catch.” the spotted oviraptor happily explained as he started to open a sack of apples. “Would you all like to give it a go?”
“I don’t see why not. What do you two think?” Wasabi said, looking back at his shy wife and anteo friend.
“I would love to try, apples are delicious.” Crumb said, walking up a little bit to get closer to the pool.
“Catching apples in a pool sounds easy enough. I can give it a go.” Järker said as he nodded.
“Excellent! Then let the game begin! You are only allowed to use your mouths, though.” the oviraptor smiled as he poured in the apples, which were a mix of tart, green ones and sweeter, red ones.
Crumb immediately focused in on the red ones and her mouth almost watered as she climbed up on the ledge of the so-called pool, in reality it was just a broken off hull piece from a nearby aircraft that was bent enough to be filled with water with some benches surrounding it to act as a stable ledge. At first, her plan was to pierce the apples to fish them up, but seeing as they just bobbled off due to being in water, she had to figure out a different approach. She glanced over at Wasabi for a second. He had a much easier time with his much broader and serrated beak, so he could carefully choose an apple and just bite down on it with ease. His beak was designed to catch fish and the like from water, after all.
“So unfair..” Crumb huffed.
Järker didn’t struggle too much either, besides his big mouth being a slight disadvantage as he accidentally kept choking on the water he accidentally kept swallowing at times when trying to catch an apple. He had to stop and cough multiple times, which Wasabi kept cackling at.
Crumb looked back into the pool, she wanted to at least catch one apple on her own, even though she knew Wasabi would gladly share his apples with her. One extra shiny and ripe looking one caught her eyes. She wanted it. She needed it. She took a deep breath before gaping wide and biting down over the slippery fruit, it almost escaped her but she managed to bite down just hard enough to get it out of the pool.
“Look, I did it!!” she exclaimed and happily flapped her wings.
“Very well done little flier!” the stand oviraptor cheered. “I knew you had it in you!”
“Good job Crumb, I’m so proud of you.” Wasabi said with a warm, loving tone.
“I feel done, I have choked too many times.” Järker coughed before shaking off all the water from his fur. “Thanks for the game, stranger.” he said as he looked at the overaptor.
“Oh the pleasure is all mine! I am glad you three had a good time, and I hope to see you around!” he smiled.
Wasabi gathered up his apples in a small bag, while Crumb was happily picking at and eating her own catch, beyond excited that she caught one. Wasabi smiled, he wanted to let her finish it before they left.
“Thanks for today Järker.” he said to his quadruped friend.
“Don’t mention it. We should meet more often, though.” Järker replied with a gentle smile.
“We really should.” Wasabi agreed, just as he felt Crumb sneaking up underneath his arm.
“I would invite you to our home but I don’t think you would want to climb up a tree.. Or that you would fit..” Crumb said, looking a bit apologetic.
“And I would invite you to mine if I had one.” Järker chuckled. “We could try to meet here though, once in a while.”
Wasabi nodded at Järker’s suggestion.
“That sounds like a good plan, I think.” Crumb agreed.
“Mind giving us a ride out?” Wasabi asked his friend.
“Not at all, get on.” Järker happily replied, before marching off with the two fliers happily riding his back.
