Zheis had seen the fire from his resting place nearby the lake. And as he had moved himself towards it it spread fast. Despite every instinct of running away he ran towards the fire. He could see dinosaurs jump from the lake-shore into the water as they tried their best to escape the fire.

As he ran as fast as his stubby Styra legs let him, he managed to meet up with Therizinosaurus who also found themselves running towards the fire. At this point they didn’t exchange any words. Clearly all three of them already knew what they were going to do. Instead they focused on hurrying through the forest and making it close to the fire. They were on the side to which the air blew the fire. It was most definitely spreading towards them.

“We need to make the ground wet.” One of the Therizinosaurus said. A dark, slightly purple Therizinosaurus with a light chest. She looked around as if she hoped to find something to scoop water with.

“We need to dig a ditch.” Zheis added. They could do both. They could make sure the ground was wet and dig a ditch. At least in his head they could do it. They were three dinosaurs, and only two of them were big.

“There’s a cabin over there.” The second Therizinosaurus pointed with his long claws over a part of the forest. “If we dig at the edge of the forest here,” He moved to point his claws towards the open field that reached far away from the lake, “the fire won't have any trees to climb to.” Zheis nodded.

“Yes, that sounds like a plan.” A plan that needed more dinosaurs to be fulfilled. But what could they do if not try. Zheis didn’t waste any time as the two Therizinosaurus he didn’t even know the names of yet ran down to where the cabin would be in hopes of finding anything to carry water in.

Zheis stuck his horn into the ground, making sure to turn up as much dirt as possible. He could feel the heat carried from the fire. A gentle reminder at the moment that the fire was coming closer and not stopping its endeavour to devour the entire forest. He didn’t care too much about how straight his line of ditch was. He just needed to get it started. It would stop any grass-fire from spreading. That was all the ditch needed to do. And it needed to be wide to do so.

The two Therizinosaurus returned. They had found big metal buckets and carried them into the lake to fill them. They looked drenched but it didn’t stop them. It was evident that they would need more help.

“If you see anyone, tell them to help us stop it, if they can.” The two purple Therizinosaurus nodded as they poured the water onto the dirt in front of him. It wasn’t much water but it made the dirt almost immedietly easier to handle. Zheis kept going until he heard the sound of other dinosaurs.

We’re here to help. Zheis looked up to find himself face to face with three Albos. Two green Albos and one black. Zheis nodded quickly.

“Help me dig the ditch. I will make the first line. You all make sure to drag the dirt out as wide as possible. But make sure it happens fast.” The three Albos didn’t argue. They all just nodded as they ran up to the dirt he had already turned over and used their feet to make it as wide as possible.

They are making more progress now. The three Albos worked hard and as the two Therizinosaurus returned again they poured out the water.

“You-” Zheis said, hesitating as he realised he didn’t know the name of the Therizinosaurus with the anteater marking.

“Adelaide.” She answered quickly.

“Adalaide. Have you seen if the fire is spreading fast over here?”

“I have seen it spreading. I will make sure to check extra well when we go down again.” She nodded. “Blanket! Help me check the forest.” The other purple Therizinosaurus nodded.

“Roger that.” As they both hurried down the forest to get more water. Leaving Zheis and the two Albos to keep their digging.

“I have not seen any other dinosaurs.” Blanket said between heavy breaths as they ran as fast as they could.

“They must be scared.” Adelaide said with a solemn voice. “I don’t judge them.”

They knew the best way to run down to the lake by now. They had run it a few times.

“I wish I could carry more.” Blanket said as he hurried out into the water.

“Me too.” They filled the water fast as their gaze travelled over the roaring fire. “It’s getting closer.”

“I am not surprised. Did you feel how hot it is by the others? I don’t think they even realise.”

As they carried the water up from the lake and prepared to run back up to pour out the water they were joined by a few other dinosaurs. They were running from the fire.

“Don’t you see! There’s a fire!” One of them, the most shocked one, shouted. A brown Pachy.

“Yes, we are trying to stop it.” The pachy didn’t seem to care as it passed them by but three of the other dinosaurs stopped in their tracks and looked at the buckets.

“Can we help?” Two of the dinosaurs were dacents and the third one was a Sucho.

“Yes, we got more buckets and need help digging the ditch to stop the fire. Can you carry any?” The three dinosaurs nodded and attempted to carry the buckets as carefully as they could.

Blanket and Adelaide grabbed more of the metal buckets that was laid by the old fisherman cabin and hurried to fill them even more before leading the way back up to Zheis and the other dinosaurs that joined them in their fight against time as the crackling of the fire slowly got closer to them. Threatening them with the intense heat it expelled.

Even embers could be seen, sizzling out for the most before they hit any dry leaves. It was only a question of time now.

1040 words.
