Ares has proven his strength during the arena trial and now faces the queen of the Iguanodons and all of Atlantis, Rhys. It's at this point he finally learns why plants have been running wild on the islands. The dome encasing Atlantis underwater is leaking and if not fixed, the whole kingdom will go under. To avoid this fate, the Atlanteans are making a place for themselves on the islands and spreading their influence across the lands. They have learned to endure the wild flora, but the creatures above the surface have not and could be subjected to endless dangers if this continues, including Ares' family back home. However, Rhys has made her intentions known and is not willing to go back on her plans. Atlantis will move to the islands, whether the surface-dwellers liked it or not. Ares is willing to help, but not the way Queen Rhys wants it. If she isn't willing to compromise, Ares will challenge her to take things into his own talons.
