The sound of Rocky’s falling echoed as wind shrilled through the air, sometimes being loud and others quiet, the island's mountains were vast and large with most dinosaurs deciding maybe it wasn’t best to explore but others liked the challenge. Grey scales followed by a blue facial marking came into view.. Smoketrail a young Styraco who usually found himself away from the herd due to the need to explore. 

“Surely this can’t be that hard besides who likes to look at grass all day anyways” he mumbled to himself as he carefully moved his footing around standing on the side of a harsh mountain that had a trail just big enough for him to stand on. The mountains weren’t the reason he was here; he wanted to explore and see what the volcanos that were hidden up here had to offer instead of being in the valley where his herd was.

Loud rumbles and smoke puffed from the volcanos as Smoketrail made his way up the pathway moving rocks and logs out of the way with his horn if they got in the way, he was getting closer as he watched the smoke float away in the air and felt the rumbles in his feet. His elders always spoke about the mountains and Volcanos and what they had to offer but the dangers of where they were usually made them stop dead in the tracks of exploring them, but Smoketrail was young and didn’t really see the danger as scary but as a challenge for him.

“Look at all these rocks, never have seen such blackened ones down in the valley” he said looking at the large rocks that sat on the Rocky Mountain side, they smelt like volcanic ash and seemed to have dried out the area they landed in as the plant life that did grow around here was dry and sometimes bare.

Smoketrail continued on as he could smell the ash more the more he climbed the pathway and the view was magnificent. He could see the whole valley from up here as he watched some birds fly by using the updrafts that the semi-active volcanos gave out when they tumbled.

Now that Smoketrail had made it up he spotted large pits that were dried out that once would be lava pots they called them, and the ground felt warm almost thermal like, he was close to an active volcano and he could feel it “see this place is great, free thermal therapy, from walking all the time” he said laughing to himself as he laid down in the rubble and taking it all in, he wondered how old these were and what even would live up here since it was quiet.

“I should come up here more often, you just have to watch your step is all” he added, snorting as some ash flew in his face causing him to shake his head “mind you the ash could be annoying”. Through the rocks he spotted a large viper who seemed to also be using the heat that came through the rubble as a basking spot which caught his attention as he had never seen that kind of animal down in the valley; it was new to him.

“ different wildlife as well huh in the mountains” he snorted to himself watching as the viper moved off into the dry grass and some rubble piles out of his sight. After a while he wanted to explore a bit more as his scales became hot and maybe he could spot some open lava pots the mountain was hiding.

Smoketrail stood up as he walked on the flat surface looking for any sign of lava pots that weren’t hardened over and being careful to not step on the new viper he saw. Soon enough he spotted the orange glow from holes in the ground and rushed over to see the lava pots as they bubbled and boiled, he had found some and it seemed like the long trek up here was worth it as he was exploring and experiencing what the mountain had to offer.

“Lava pots! I knew they were hiding somewhere up here” he approached carefully watching as the bubbles popped every once in a while, these were rare to spot and he only ever heard about them. He stopped looking around as he wanted to toss a stone in finally finding one and picking it up with his beak and tossing it in as he watched it sink slowly.

“This place isn’t all that bad, just hard to get up here” he said sitting down and watching the pots boil, after while he began to lose interest and stood up before looking around once more the air was getting hot and seemed liked it was time to head back down the mountain area, he could only handle the heat for so long and now was understanding why the elders didn’t venture up here to often due to the hidden dangers.

“Well I think that’s enough mountain exploring for me today, seems like the volcano is getting more active” he said to himself skidding down the way he came as rubble fell with each step but eventually he was back on the trail and was on the way back down, it was time to head back to the herd and tell his herd mates what he saw up here and maybe next time he could convince others to come with him.

“I’ll be back mountain just you wait, but for now maybe I should watch here my footing is because coming down is a lot harder than going up” he snorted skidding down or sliding every few steps while he walked, his adventure was over and a few minutes later he found himself

Back on flat ground and the feeling of long grass brushing up against his scales.

“ What an adventure, but I could use a bite now” he said, taking one last look up from where he had come from. It was time to head back to the herd and that’s what Smoketrail was on the way to do,besides he could hear the herd getting ready to move.

By the time he made it back to his herd he had a few friends run up to to him and ask

About his mountaineer expedition and as he was about to start his story he heard loud bubble pops from atop where he had been, the volcano

Had reached its heat limit and let go of the hot air sending rubble he used to climb and get up

There down into

The valley.

“Good thing I left when I did huh?” He said to

His friends who laughed and shook their crests, walking alongside them he explained what he saw 

up in the mountains including the viper and different types of

Volcanic rocks, and as he though his herd mates wanted to

Join him next time in his rocky adventure, he could.  show them How to makeTheir way around the tough trails and different rock types, but for now

He was happy to be back from

His expedition, he didn’t realize

How tough it was to climb the mountain but next time he would go much higher.
